Smelling salts are ammonium carbonate. When the bottle is opened the salt releases ammonia gas, and a short sniff from a hand's length away irritates the lining of the nose and lungs enough to trigger a sharp inhalation reflex. Heart rate and alertness jump for a minute or two. That is the whole effect: a brief, hard jolt of arousal, which is why powerlifters and strongman athletes reach for them before a heavy single or a third attempt. They do not make you stronger; they make you more switched on for the next ninety seconds.
Our smelling salts
City Strength's smelling salts are high-grade ammonium carbonate in individually sealed bottles, so they are fresh when you open them and stay potent for months if you close the lid properly between uses. They come in three scents: Original, which is straight ammonia; Citrus Crush; and Menthol Madness, which adds a cooling hit on top. The scent does not change the strength, only what it smells like on the way in. Most lifters who try all three settle on one and stick with it.
How to use them
Open the bottle, hold it about a hand's length below the nose, and take one short sniff. Do not put the bottle to your nostril and do not take a long breath; the point is the reflex, not the dose, and a bottle held too close will make your eyes stream and cost you the lift. If the bottle has lost its kick, a quick shake with the lid on wakes it up. Close it firmly after every use or the ammonia escapes and the bottle goes flat within days.
Use them for the sets that need them, not every set. Lifters who sniff before every warm-up find the effect fades and the salts stop doing anything on the lift that matters.
Who should not use them
Anyone with asthma or another respiratory condition, anyone pregnant, and anyone under 18. If you have a heart condition or high blood pressure, talk to your doctor first; the brief spike in heart rate and blood pressure is the mechanism. Never use them on someone who has been knocked out or is unwell; they are a lifting aid, not first aid. Keep them away from children.
What the rules say
Smelling salts are legal in powerlifting. The IPF and its affiliates allow them but require that they be used out of view of the audience, so use them in the warm-up area or with your back turned, not on the platform. Other federations vary; check your rulebook. They are not on any anti-doping list.
Common questions
How long does a bottle last? With the lid closed properly between uses, several months of regular training. Left open, a few days.
Smelling salts or ammonia capsules? Same chemistry. Capsules are single-use and crushed; a bottle is reusable and cheaper over time.
Do they actually help? For a maximal attempt when you are flat, yes, in the sense that they get you aroused and focused quickly. They will not rescue a lift you were never going to make.
Every bottle ships from our Sydney warehouse with fast Australia-wide delivery.
